Characterization Engineer

Hiring Manager Notes:

What are the top "must have non-negotiable" skill sets that need to be present on a resume? 

  • Characterization, data collection, analysis, some programming for automation, electromechanical test systems, electrochemistry, biopotential sensors.
  • Programming experience, any one of following is good: MATLAB, Python, LabView.
  • Having soldering or basic electronic prototyping will also help. 
  • Experience creating experiment protocols and reports would also be great.
  • Thinking of PhD students or characterization engineers


  • Develop and operate characterization platforms to validate biopotential electrodes
  • Data acquisition, signal processing, and programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C, LabView)
  • Experience designing and building custom test systems for realtime data acquisition
  • Experience with troubleshooting and debugging prototype hardware / software
  • Material preparation and characterization using electromechanical systems
  • Electronic and PCB design.
  • This role will involve at least 50% of device characterization and tester operation work


  • Experience with biopotential and electrochemical signal acquisition
  • Analyze sensor data to come up with insights for sensor development
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical instrumentation principles
  • Experience with electrochemistry instruments, electrode fabrication and testing for skin surface measurements. Systems knowledge for developing test setups. 
  • Potentiostat, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Electromechanical testing, Electrochemical testing, Matlab, Python, Labview


  • BS, MS or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant field

Screening Questions:

  1. Characterization: Briefly describe a few past characterization projects including the hardware and software choices. Explain the main responsibilities and collaborations in the project when applicable.
  2. Fixture design: Describe an electromechanical experiment setup to vary a mechanical parameter while measuring the changes of an electrical parameter. Describe the design choices for the hardware test setup, software data collection method and data presentation options.  
  3. Past experiences: Describe any past experience with one or more of the following areas: Biopotential signals, electrochemistry, impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, stretchable conductive materials.
