Linguistic Tools Engineer, Phonetics (8784696)

We're looking for engineers with experience working with language data to build tools and systems to support a growing team of phoneticians and language experts. You will work collaboratively with linguists, software engineers, and research scientists to create tools that provide the foundation of a linguistic knowledge platform. This platform will integrate with existing language analysis tools and help our partners rapidly scale speech-tech development and expansion.

In addition to a proven engineering track record, the ideal candidate has experience with 'language as data' tasks, IPA/SAMPA transcription, and familiarity with linguistic concepts like dialects and mergers. Experience building machine learning and data analysis systems is a big plus.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop tools and processes in Python, JavaScript, PHP, etc.
  • Develop tools in a variety of environments, including server side APIs, client side front-ends, and command line tools
  • Work with project partners to understand requirements and help coordinate development strategy
  • Provide software engineering knowledge and mentorship to less experienced developers
  • Conduct code reviews with less experienced developers

Qualifications

 

  • Experience writing tested, reusable, readable, object-oriented code
  • Familiarity with IPA, linguistic variation, and principles of phonology.
  • Excitement for starting new projects from the ground

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Industry experience delivering products to users
  • Strong working knowledge of Python and JavaScript
  • Proficiency in React
  • Working experience in computational linguistics/corpora linguistics/statistical methods such as joint sequence models.
  • Experience building relationships with users

 

 

Qualifications

 

Experience in various areas of linguistics, especially phonology, phonetics, dialectology, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics, and field work
Experience/proficiency with transcription systems (such as SAMPA, IPA) - Required
Collaborative and solution­ oriented attitude
Ability to quickly learn new skills and adapt to a changing environment
Strong problem ­solving and analytical skills
Attention to detail

 

Additional: 

Fluency in two or more natural languages
Industry experience with TTS/ASR
Experience with basic programming techniques and familiarity with languages and platforms such as Praat, Python, SQL, PHP, Hack, JavaScript, and React

 

  • Academic degree in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or related field
  • Interest and experience in various areas of linguistics, especially phonology, phonetics, sociolinguistics, dialectology, computational linguistics, and field work
  • Proficiency in transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA, and ToBi
  • Ability to analyze waveforms and spectrograms for phonetic features
  • Collaborative and solution-oriented attitude
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to a changing environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Enthusiasm for detail work and ability to focus for significant portions of the work day
  • Experience with basic programming techniques and familiarity with languages and platforms such as Praat, Python, SQL, PHP, Hack, JavaScript, and React
  • Ability to speak and write in English fluently and idiomatically

B.A. in Linguistics, Speech Science, or related field

  • Advanced degree and/or industry experience
  • Fluency in two or more natural languages
  • Familiarity with version control, unit tests, and other programming best practices
